John Ritter was on the show because he was the person in charge of the show's production company (Adam Productions.) I didn't like the TV critic being replaced by Brian, as he wasn't as funny, and didn't poke fun at Jules as much. I agree that John should have stayed behind the scenes of the show though.
I liked this show for a while, more for the cast than the writing. Jamie Lee Curtis was sweet and sexy; Richard Lewis was (for the most part) appealingly neurotic; Ann Magnuson was GREAT as the flaky, driven, boho editrix; and Holly Fulger should have been given more to do as the best friend.
So thanks to the cast, the show more or less bumped along for a while at a B to B+ level, with no great episodes and a few real clunkers. Still, it kinda found its voice as a sweet-natured romantic comedy, more charming and lightly amusing than laugh-out-loud funny. But hey, charm ain't nothing to be sneezed at...
Then came the John Ritter episodes. That's when the show went into the shark tank for me. Sure, his character was meant to be a jerk, but he was a smarmily unfunny jerk that sucked any charm right outta the show. And without charm, this series had nothing.

I've never seen a worse comedian. I was just reading about his substance abuse. I think he should just consume himself into oblivion and leave the being funny, which obviously he is not and acting to the professionals.
I love Richard Lewis, so I hung in there a long time with this show - maybe it's just me but I always thought the sexual chemistry between the main characters was tenuous, at best. There were some memorable lines due to good writing. When Hannah is going on a trip and she's cleaning her oven (or was it the character played by Holly Fulger?) and she says she's doing it in case the plane crashes and she dies - so people who talk about how tragic her death was, "but look how clean her oven is!" That's awesome...the fact that I don't have a self-cleaning oven so this comes back to me every time I reach for the easy-off is why I haven't forgotten this show.
This show was one of many sitcoms in the early 90's and mid 90's with the word "love" in the title. (Love and War, Anything But Love, For Your Love, Can't Hurry Love....) Anyway, I love Jamie Lee on the big screen, but on a TV series sitcom.....nah. It just wasn't watchable to me to see her and Richard Lewis in bed. Something was wrong there. I don't know what. Ewww.
Although this show was already in the minivan booking towards Sea World, I agree that it "officially" jumped its personal shark with the big "They Do It" episode. (But there was a great line when Jamie Lee was obsessing to her best friend about what might go wrong: "What if I disappoint him?" "Are you planning to show up?") However, I must respectfully disagree with an earlier poster who couldn't imagine any woman being attracted to Richard Lewis -- funny guys are HOT! I've had a thing for RL ever since I first saw him do his stand-up.
I never would have believed John Ritter could be so annoying. I can't decide if the show jumped then or when Jamie and Richard got it on. I thought it was strange how the Jamie's character changed from a nerd (1st season) to a pretty hot chick (2nd season). Unfortunately, Richard Lewis did not change from a comedic toad to a TV prince. Oh well. It still had some originality and good moments. And Holly Fulger was a nice addition.
Why should life be different than a tv show? Every time a babe gives it up, they get psycho and the guy starts thinking of ways to get the hell out of the relationship. What is it about giving it up that drives them nuts? Jamie Lee is HOT in Movies but sucked so bad on the show that I couldn't watch a whole episode. >From her early thrillers to dancing for Arnold in that crappy undercover movie, she can melt the screen. So why didn't they let that sexuality come out on the small screen? Such a waste!
This show had its ups and downs, but I wouldn't say it jumped the shark when they did it. Maybe because of the fact that how they did them doing it for the first time was, in my opinion, very funny and watchable. And so sue, I like Richard Lewis. The two had chemistry. The supporting cast was also good--come on, Ann Magnuson can be brilliant. The show didnt fall off in quality until the very end, but all in all, no jumping.
I loved this show with all my heart. I was disappointed when, after the first season, they revamped the show with a new editor and Hannah's (Jamie Lee Curtis) move to the city. But it definitely didn't jump the shark yet. But when John Ritter kept appearing ... YIKES. I think he's vying with Ted McGinley for patron saint at times. The addition of Ritter ruined the series.
Even the title of this show was screaming for them NOT to do the deed. what other show can say that? They should have made it aa long standing 'one-night stand'. You know how in real life you have a 'friend' who's good to go to when you need some, because you are sexually attracted, but you both know each other well enough that neither one has any pretensions of actually having a relationship? That would have been good for this show. But they took the tonic that anyone associated with the show (except Lewis, apparently) should have known would kill it. It seems so obvious, how could he not have seen this coming 2 galaxies away. As much as Richard Lewis complains that Paul Reiser ripped him off (true), at least Reiser waited 5 years or so to take the bitter pill with Mabel. Jamie Lee and Lewis did it way too soon into the thing. He deserves it. It's kinkd of like his stand up bits: he feels everything will turn so crap, and it does!
Doesn't anyone remember when Jamie's character was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland (!) (or was I hallucinating?) and they tried to make spit jokes out of it. Is there anyone on the planet who would find this amusing? This was the third and last episode I watched, but I DON'T think it could've gone anywhere but down after that.
